We all live in the Domain of Readers—but what species of book reader are you? The fun, appropriately wordy infographic below is my homage to the classic Linnaean classification charts of plants and living things. In this case, we’re describing and classifying close to 50 reader species—from the folks who see books as precious display objects to those who sort of hate reading. You’ll definitely see yourself (The Kindle Convert?) and a few of your friends (The Book Thief? The Bathroom Reader?) on this chart. And don’t be surprised if you find you’re a cross-species mutt—true book lovers are very wide-ranging in their genetic makeup!
July 2013 note: Hello to everyone who’s arriving here from tweets and posts on wonderful places such as all the reader Tumbleblogs, @GalleyCat, @RandomHouse, @HuffPostBooks, @TheAtlanticWire, @PublishersWeekly, @ParisReview, @HarvardBooks, @BookRiot, @Doubleday, @PenguinBooks, @Hachette Books, @Scholastic, @ShelfAwareness, @TheBookClubABC, and so many other reader havens. I now know where my reading tribes live!
Via Google I’ve been able to track a lot of reactions and comments to this Reader Species infographic. It’s so fun to see all the new readers species that have been discovered (“Cover Lovers,” anyone?). And welcome to all my fellow reader mutts.
Now, at the request of some librarians, I’ve turned this graphic into a poster (see at right), so perhaps the Readers Classification Chart may be coming soon to a library or school near you.
Enjoy!
